Church GroupsThere are many opportunities to connect with other members at First Unitarian. Groups revolve around religious education, music, church organization, social activities, and special interests. Your participation is vital to the life of the church. Please contact the group(s) that interest you in order to get more details.
Religious Education Sunday Morning Adult Round Table (SMART) meets Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the Library and provides presentations and discussions of general interest in religious studies. Chalice Night offers a variety of programs each Wednesday evening, following a catered dinner and brief worship service. Events begin at 5:30 pm.
Children and Youth Religious Education is offered for children, toddlers through high school.
Programs Youth Group meets regularly for middle school and senior high youth.
UU101 Held in the Fall and Spring, these orientations acquaint visitors and new members with the history, principles, and practices of Unitarian Universalism and First Unitarian Church. Choir The choir sings every other Sunday, and practices are on Thursday evenings and/or Sunday mornings. For those who cannot be a part of the choir all year, there is opportunity to sing with the choir for the Christmas Eve and Easter services.
Brownbaggers involves older members of the church who meet monthly to hear speakers and to socialize. One or more "field trips" are made each year.
Circle Suppers Organized at various times of the year, Circle Suppers include couples and singles of various age groups who socialize in each other’s homes by taking turns hosting the supper. Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a comprehensive sexuality curriculum, offering age-appropriate sexuality education for kindergarten through adult.
Affiliates
CUUPS (Covenant of UU Pagans) For those interested in earth-centered spirituality,
CUUPS holds regular discussions and celebrates the eight seasonal sabbats (holidays).
Interweave is dedicated to the spiritual, political, and social well-being of Unitarian Universalists confronting oppression as lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender persons, and their heterosexual allies. All members and friends of First Unitarian Church are welcome. Contact the
Women's Alliance Open to all women in the church, the group meets for discussions, activities, socials, and special events. The Women's Alliance is a chapter of the UU Women's Federation.
Transylvania Connection First Unitarian has a Partner church in the small Transylvanian city of Nagyenyed in Romania. Several groups from this church have visited there, and we entertain various visitors and ministers from the Partner Church.
Special Interest Groups
ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Meets monthly at a local restaurant for grub and gab. UU Christian Fellowship For those with an interest in Christianity, whether believers, seekers, doubters, or skeptics. All are welcome.
Drum Circle An open informal group encompassing beginners to intermediates. Meets in the choir room on the second Sunday of each month from 4:00 to 5:30. Bring your drum or use one of the extras that are generally available.
Church Organization: Board of Trustees, Council, and Committees A democratically organized and operated church, we depend on a variety of committees to carry out the institutional functions of the organization. Committee work is a way to make a contribution to the on-going life of the church and to get to know it better. Board of Trustees Elected for three-year staggered terms at the Annual Congregational Meeting, the Board is responsible for the ongoing business and policy-making functions of the church. It elects its own chair, who also serves as the president of the church.
Church Council Composed of six members elected by the congregation, the minister, the DRE, the Volunteer Coordinator and a liaison from the Board. The Council is responsible for planning and coordinating the church’s program.
Congregational Services Committee Sends cards, visits, the housebound and hospitalized and assists the minister in pastoral care. Responsible for Sunday Coffee Hour and provides receptions following Memorial and other special services.
Public and Denominational Relations Keeps the congregation informed of UUA and Heartland District news and events and arranges delegates to General Assembly and the District Annual meeting. Promotes First Unitarian to the community and oversees publication of the church newsletter, the Steepletalk.
Finance Committee Oversees the preparation of the church budget, coordinates the weekly collection, manages investments and endowment and recommends financial policy to the Board.
House and Grounds Committee Maintains the building, landscaping and other matters pertaining to the building and grounds.
Shared Ministry Committee Coordinates the church’s program related to membrs and visitors by supplying greeters, presenting newcomers' orientation classes, conducting follow up calls to visitors, and coordinating the new member services. Staffs committees, Council and Board positions. Addresses issues or troubleshoots when committees need assistance.
Memorial Garden Committee Meets as required to carry out the provisions of the Memorial Garden Policy which provides for the interment of ashes of members and friends of the church; administers Memorial Garden Fund and arranges the purchase of memorial plaques.
Committee on Ministry Serves as a conduit for opinions, complaints and suggestions members of the congregation might not want to make to the minister directly. Evaluates the performance of the minister and functions as a sounding board for the minister.
Music Committee Oversees music programs, works with Director of Music and Choir Director and arranges concert and special performances.
Religious Education Committee Works with Religious Education Director to provide a well-rounded UU religious education program for children, youth and adults.
Social Responsibility Committee Informs the congregation of community issues and events of social concern, administers a social responsibility focus each year, budgets funds donated to local groups and works with the minister to keep first Unitarian an active presence in the community.
Worship Committee and Worship Associates Works with the minister to develop and evaluate Celebration of Life services; organizes lay-led services, arranges ushers and provides decorations.
Youth/Adult Committee (YAC) Oversees Junior and Senior Youth Groups; works with youth to provide conferences here or assist them in getting to District or denominational youth events.
Office Volunteers For those who would like to volunteer during the day, there are numerous opportunities to help out with the office. There is also a social event for all office volunteers once a year.
