Women's Alliance

logo

The mission of the Women's Alliance of the First Unitarian Church is to advocate for issues related to women and to work together on these issues in conjunction with the Unitarian Universalist Women's Foundation.

We do this by first creating a climate for its members that promotes physical and emotional self-care: by nurturing supportive and meaningful relationships among its members, and by supporting each member's pursuit to living a balanced life.

2009 – 2010 Annual Report of the Women's Alliance

This is the first year following our By Laws. We tried very hard and much progress has been made, thanks especially to the dedicated members of the Steering Committee, Kathy Drehmel, secretary; Lois Allen, treasurer; Kathy Rogers, historian and the three at large members; Geneva Fry, Claudia Runge and Deanna Hopper.

In September the membership of the Women's Alliance had the opportunity to choose goals for the program year within the categories of Outreach, Sistership, Spirituality and Education, Service to First Unitarian and Fundraising. All of the following events and programs were planned and implemented by members of the Alliance. Thank you all.

Outreach:

  • The Alliance contributed $200.00 to the Louisville Free Library Flood Recovery Fund.
  • We offered the members of the Alliance and the Congregation of First Unitarian to sponsor a boy and girl from Kentucky and Indiana in the Angel Tree Program.
  • Members of the Alliance worked at the Kentucky Religious Coalition Booth at the State Fair and participated in the KRCRC Vigil held at Central Presbyterian Church.
  • The Liberal Sew and Sews completed blankets for the Project Linus. These blankets were blessed by Rev. Dawn Cooley during a Celebration of Life.

Sistership:

  •

"The Social Action Shower" which will take place on May 22, 2010. This event will benefit the "Help Office" as well as offer an opportunity for Sistership.
  • A Women's Retreat was held at Hopscotch House on November 7,8, and 9th.
  • Lunch/Brunch Bunch meets monthly at a local restaurant.

Spirituality and Education:

  • The Celebration of Life about the life and times of Margaret Fuller was held on Sunday, March 21, 2010.
  • The revised Cakes for the Queen of Heaven was presented as a Chalice Night Program for 5 sessions.
  • The Wise Women Program has started and will continue into the next year. Twelve women are participating.
  • Betsy Wiley from The Healing Place spoke to Alliance at one of our four general meetings.

Service to First Unitarian

  • Purchase a set of Hymnals for First Unitarian
  • Planned and had a great fundraising Spaghetti Luncheon for the Green Initiatives and Solar Array Project in January.
  • The Steering Committee will receive the report of the Committee researching ways of making Women of First Unitarian more present in portraiture around the Church.
  • Fundraising: The Alliance members baked a Red, White or Blue Pie to sell at the Red, White and Blue Pie Sale on the Sunday before Labor Day.
  • The Steering Committee planned and held four general meetings of the Women's Alliance through out the program year. At the April 10th meeting we elected Jill Sampson and Nancy MacPherson to the Steering Committee. We welcome them and now I will take this time to thank Kathy Rogers and Claudia Runge for their service on the Steering Committee, as their terms on the Steering Committee are completed.
  • The Women's Retreat Planning Committee, Kathy Rogers, chair created a wonderful Retreat at Hopscotch House. We thank you all.
  • In January Liberal Sew and Sews embarked on a project to keep a secret for months, collect small pieces of material from women of First Unitarian and then have Linda Parry create a pattern that would incorporate these many pieces of material to produce "the secret" a stole for our first women settled minister, Rev. Dawn Cooley. Linda Parry had help from Lois Allen, Kathy Drehmel and Joan Johnson. The Secret was presented to Rev. Cooley just after the Blessing and before the reception after the Installation on April 25th. The Steering Committee served as Ushers for the Installation.

This report is submitted by Kathy Thackeray, president of the Women's Alliance.
