Children & Youth Religious Education Curricula
2007-2008

Preschool
CELEBRATING ME AND MY WORLD. This program celebrates the wondrous qualities of children themselves and expands outward to the people and world around them. It provides preschoolers with experiences and opportunities to grow in trust and caring and to develop a sense of connectedness with all of life.
Teachers(fall): Mary Griffin and Phil Candee

K/1
SPECIAL TIMES acquaints children with the Jewish and Christian heritages out of which our UU faith has grown, and engages them in celebrations of Jewish and Christian holidays. We will supplement this curriculum with celebrations from earth-based and other world religions.
Teachers (fall): Rae Cobbs and Susannah Onwood

2nd/3rd Grades
A STEPPING STONE YEAR is based on two premises: 1) that religion helps people find answers to important life questions; and 2) that UUs find these answers for themselves. The program focuses on creation myths of the world, stories that scientists tell, birth and death myths, and the life stories of significant figures in our U or U history.
Teachers (fall): Rhonda Green-Barron and Roger Bradshaw

4th/5th Grades
A KINGDOM OF EQUALS: Jesus's Radical Path to Love and Justice is a program for Unitarian Universalist young people about the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Teachers (fall): Janice Molnar and Doug Taylor

Middle School (6th, 7th, and 8th Grades)
TRADITIONS WITH A WINK teaches an understanding of UU faith that can replace the vague "anything we want to" statement with: "We come from a long tradition of questioning and searching. We come from a long tradition of loving kindness and good works." Participants wll hear powerful stories of our UU heritage.
Teachers: Kendra Calvert, Nancy MacPherson, Jim Schweickart

Senior High
Senior high youth and adult advisors will work together to establish curriculum needs and goals for the year. Our R.E. Library has a rich selection of curricula available with themes ranging from social justice issues to UU heritage and identity to world religions.
Teachers/Advisors: Jon Free, Kathy Gapsis, Roger Ohlman

Multigenerational Worship Services
Learning to participate in worship services with the larger congregation is an important aspect of religious education for children and youth. About once each month, our Celebration of Life will have a multigenerational focus. Children and youth are invited to attend, seated with their families, as our entire church community celebrates together. Children and youth often take an active role in these services as musicians, ushers, bulletin cover artists, etc. Childcare is available for preschoolers during multigenerational services, although all children are welcome and encouraged to attend at least a portion of the service. No regular R.E. classes will be offered on these Sundays. Dates of multigenerational services will be announced in Steepletalk. R.E. teachers will also be able to provide dates as they are scheduled.
