First Unitarian Church
For 175 years, First Unitarian Church has been a force for justice in
Louisville, and ten years ago, we became a Welcoming Congregation – meaning we
not only affirmatively welcome gay, lesbian, bisexuals and transgender
individuals and families to join with us in worship and other church activities,
but we have committed ourselves to the quest for justice for sexual minorities.
Two years ago the congregation voted overwhelmingly to hang a large banner on
the front of the church declaring that “Civil Marriage is a Civil Right.”
Sadly, the recent windstorms destroyed the banner. Many folks in the
congregation have missed the banner and asked that it be replaced.
The Adult OWL(Our Whole Lives – Sexuality and our Faith) group, the force behind the
original banner, and Interweave (the Unitarian Universalist organization for
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons and their allies) have joined to
raise the funds to replace it. We now have the glorious opportunity to
celebrate three events simultaneously: The replacement of our marriage equality
banner, the tenth anniversary of our becoming a Welcoming Congregation, and the
175th anniversary of First Unitarian as a force for justice in our community.
We plan to have a big party – and you are invited!
If you have been part of the many justice movements in Louisville and
surrounding areas, if you
have been part of First Unitarian, if you agree that a religious voice for
fairness deserves support, if you applaud the courage to stand for marriage
equality, or any of the above, you are invited to join us on May 12, 2006 at
7:00 pm for a finger food buffet, rededication of the banner, and a dance! Plan
now to join us. We look forward to the homecoming of many old friends and to
meeting many new ones.
